Players
There are four main positions in the game of soccer and from these four, there are several sub-positions. The keeper, defenders, midfielders, and forwards are the positions that young players typically learn first. As they get older and develop their skills, the positions become more specialized and the center forward becomes a striker and midfielders become attacking or defensive, and the list goes on.
Below is a diagram of where the players line up on the field using the four main positions playing 11 v 11. For games involving fewer players, coaches will modify line ups by having fewer players at each position. Below is just a sample of the huge number of variations of lineups available. Coaches may choose different lineups depending on if they want to take a more offensive or defensive stance.
